Lock cylinder spring

The lock cylinder poppet spring is a small component in most poppet lock cylinders. It is a thin spiral spring that sits at the top of each poppet in the lock cylinder. The purpose of the poppet spring is to provide tension between the top and the bottom pin, which in turn creates a shear line that allows the lock to be opened.

When the key is inserted into the lock, it pushes the bottom pin upwards and compresses the pin spring. When the key is turned, the top pin aligns with the shear line to open the lock.

The pin springs are usually made from three materials - phosphor bronze wire, stainless steel and high carbon steel - which enable them to withstand the repeated compression and stretching that occurs when the lock is used. They are usually coated with a thin layer of lubricant to reduce friction and prevent rusting.

Although the lock cylinder pin springs are relatively small, they play a vital role in the overall function of the pin lock. If the pin spring is worn or damaged, it may cause the lock to malfunction or even fail altogether. For this reason, it is important to have a professional locksmith carry out any repairs or maintenance on the lock cylinder to ensure that all components, including the pin spring, are in proper working order.
