A euro cylinder lock is the most common type of lock used in door locks and comes in various sizes. Choosing the right lock depends on a number of factors, including what type of doors they will be fitted to, who will be using them and their level of security requirements.
The most basic type of euro cylinder lock is the standard euro profile, with no markings on it and offering minimal levels of security. Other types of euro cylinder lock include a half euro cylinder that has key access on just one side, ideal for garages, sheds, and other locations where the lock is only needed to be opened from one direction. A thumb turn on the other end is used to unlock and lock the door, and this is commonly seen on uPVC doors in public or managed buildings.
These locks are all held in place with a central screw, located on the face edge of the door. This can be loosened with a screwdriver, and silicone spray can also be used to help ease the process. Once the screw has been removed, the cylinder can be removed and replaced with a new one. It is important to take note of the measurements of the original lock, as the replacement will need to be the same size or else it won’t fit in the door. To measure a cylinder lock, simply remove it from the door and measure from the end of the barrel to the center of the screw hole on both sides of the door handle backplate, and then round to the nearest millimetre.
Once the measurement has been taken, it is then a simple case of selecting a suitable replacement and following the same instructions to install it. It is a good idea to lubricate a lock once it has been dismantled or disassembled to keep the internal mechanisms working smoothly and to prevent them from sticking; this can be done by inserting a penetrating silicone spray into the keyhole.
Depending on the level of security required, other additional features may be added to the lock, such as anti-pick pins and warding. These will make the lock more difficult to manipulate with tools and can protect against a range of attack methods, including lock picking and drilling. Some locks may even feature a snap line that protects against the technique known as lock snapping.
